Personal Coding Projects

As a developer, I view code as simply an extension of the creative work and eye for design I have cultivated over the breadth of my career in creativity. In the end, clearly communicating a project’s message boils down to using every design tool you have at your disposal—be it copy, graphics, or code—to connect to the core emotional impact you want to have with your user. For me, the browser's DOM is simply another canvas to paint on.

Applaudable

live Demo | Github | Video tour

Applaudable creates easy mobile-optimized web-based electronic programs for any event. I had the idea for this application after attending a theater performance where the audience was directed to a url to access an e-program, only to find the link only lead to a downloadable pdf. Applaudable is the easy web-native solution that allows arts producers to save on printing costs and engage their audiences on the devices they already have on hand. Built with Vue.js with a Google Firebase back-end.

Scriptsure

Live Demo | Github: Client / API

As a playwright, I wanted to create a scriptwriting application that married the aesthetics of Medium with the functionality of FinalDraft. Key features are a killer splash page, which combines a videocover with color grading via CSS animations, rich text editing with DraftJS (with custom block styles and custom key bindings).  Built with React/Redux/Rails stack.

DistressCall

live demo | Github: Client / API

This is a SMS-based application that helps people dealing with mental health/addiction ask for help from their trusted friends. Integrated with the Twilio API to programmatically send text messages to everyone in a user's selected circle of supporters. Users can create multiple circles in different fellowships or support groups. Built with React/Rails stack.

Does it Bechdel?

Live DEMO | Github: Client / API

A simple data visualization application that uses a data set from FiveThirtyEight which tracked over 1,700 films and whether or not they passed the Bechdel test. I used the Open Movie Database (OMDB) to expand the data set to include associate actors and directors for each movie. Built with React and Rails.

Miscellaneous Projects

I often create small one-off projects while applying for jobs to keep my skills sharp or explore new frameworks. Below is a collection of small projects I've built to hone my development chops.

New York Times Flipper

Live Demo

I created a simple Flipboard-inspired reading experience for The New York Times using Vue.js.

Characters on both sides must choose between rebuilding the world as it was and creating a new one by force.

Out of the Ice

Story by Holli Mintzer
Art by Jason Tseng

This queer science fiction retelling of Sleeping Beauty has all the trappings of a futuristic fairytale with cryogenics, lab-grown human children with alien surrogate parents, and of course, true love's kiss.

Find Your Light

Story and Art by Jason Tseng

Terry and Tommy Sun are identical twins. They're also superheroes-- part of a family super team known as The Light Brigade, lead by their light-power-wielding parents, UltraViolet and InfraRed. But Terry's been keeping a secret, and the anxiety is messing with their powers. And things take an unexpected turn when Terry tries to fix it by seeking out the aid of the mysterious Mirrorman.

This story appeared in GeeksOut's comic anthology, Power.

Color Me Queer

A SLASH COLORing book BY JASON TSENG

The concept was simple, a comic book of slash pairings in a coloring book. I've been fascinated by the pop culture tradition of "slash," and I sought to create a fun book that would embody the *squee* of seeing your favorite slash couple while also getting to participate in the art that celebrates them. Color your favorite queer couples in fandom! Couples included: Finn/Poe, Janeway/Seven of Nine, Harry/Draco, Thor/Storm, Johnny Storm/Reed Richards, Kirk/Spock/Sulu, Mako/Wu, Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes, Misty Knight/Colleen Wing, Janet Van Dyne/Wanda Maximoff, and more!
